Origins

I am writing to ask about the CARDINALE/CARDINALLE/CARDINALLI surnames. Does anyone on this forum know the origin of this surname? Have your families always lived in Sicily & Italy or did they come from somewhere else? And who is your oldest know ancestor? I am asking because the common belief has always been that our surname (CARDINAL) was of French origin, however I no longer believe this to be true and am searching for definitive proof. My ancestor was Simon Jean Cardinal born in the early 1600's and sailed from LaRochelle, France in 1659 aboard the St Andre with his wife, Michelle GARNIER and 2 sons, Jehan and Jacques. On board were also Michelle's 2 sisters and husbands and Simon's niece and her husband. Please let me know if you have any information.

Thanks,
Mark Cardinal
