Carignan family history

I am just starting this research for my 73 year old mother -in-law who is a Carignan by birth. She was born in Montreal to a Alfred Carignan and Helen Flinta. Her father served in the Canadian Merchant Navy in WW2. Does anyone out there have any information about this man? Or does anyone have any idea as to where he went after the war? My mother-in-law says that he did not divorce her mother, but he seems to have fallen off the face of the earth. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanking you in advance, John
