Linda (if I may),
If I've got this right your mother must be Evelyn Laster, now living in Bossier (?sp) City, La., and you have an Aunt Dorothy, about 85-86 years old residing in San Francisco. Furthermore, since we have the same great-grandfather, we are cousins.
Although I have never met Evelyn we have exchanged Christmas cards over the past several years. (I'm hazy on how we began corresponding but my best recollection is that we did so when I answered a Christmas card she had sent to my father in 1984 and I had to tell her that Dad had died earlier that year.) Last Christmas I asked her to write in detail about her mother and that generation of Carlands and got a very nice letter in return spelling out what she remembered of Joe, Will, Bess, Lelia, and Ann. She seemed full of information and she could probably answer some of your questions.
Incidentally, Will had three children: Roy William ("Pat"), Harold, and Ralph. Pat had two boys--Roy William and John David, as did Ralph--Ralph Cole and Brian. My Dad (Harold) had three boys: Robert, John, and Thomas ("Pete"). Bob has a son, Christopher, and I have two sons--Blaise and Raphael, now adults and on their own, the former a social worker living nearby in Northern Virginia and the latter an officer in the Army in Germany. I keep up with Cole in Kansas and Brian in St. Louis. Unfortunately, we lost touch with Billy and John David when they moved to California in the 1960s.
I am a historian for the U.S. Army and write about Army combat operations in the Vietnam War.
Please correct me if I am wrong (it wouldn't be the first time) but I think I have worked out the relationship more or less accurately. Again, if I am right, you are Evelyn's and Bill's daughter and Annie Elizabeth Griffiths Carland was our great-grandmother. She--Annie--was born on 1 August 1853 and died on 21 July 1942, when I was about a month old. I have an obituary of her somewhere in my files.
Enough about my part of the family and me, what about you? Do you still live in Arkansas? What do you and yours do? Did you grow up in Arkadelphia?
I look forward to hearing from you. I posted my e-mail address on this website. Feel free to communicate directly.
