robert C seems to have used the Don some, Carter M off & on often as just a D. Carlos etc. Hannibal aka Hampton, We have some records on. Lucy Did not & Her 2 sons lafayette & Columbus & thier desc are Carlos.A major factor in the Mid-Missouri ones emphasising the Don(to this day) was Lafayette liveing in area(& his desc today)(tho there were 2 Irish Carlos settled there as well!!). & none of the groups admit any kin publicly.
There was also a well-todo DonCastle in Va that may have been an influence. But I think the Opera/play may be a factor.
Also there was/is a "Spanizing" trend of surname in NC. the very "Hispanic" name today (all colours) in NC is CHAVEZ. I at raliegh NC Archives for fun walked it back. it is CHIVES==cheves=chaves=chavez, never likely spanish!!
I feel our Carless=carless=carloss=carlos is likely based on Royal Oak & the VA records on John Carless.
th pronuciation of Carlos may be a facor as wee. my lae uncle Don Carlos Eager said Don Car-less no hard O sound. but stress he inherited that dark tiny physique from the "spanish" side. (after 300 years)
there was a Marrano family in Spain nameed Don Carlos.
In spite of "everyone" has seen, I have never found a connection between the DC son of Elizabeth Farnese & anyone else, nor what actually happened to him. have you? .
