I want to pass on the results of my research regarding the two separate individuals Abel Carnes, buried in Leavenworth, KS, and Abel Curnes of Norton, KS. I have found many old sources in many places saying these are the same people, so I want to remedy this as best I can. Feel free to post follow-ups if you have more to the story of the Two Abels.
I can see how it was easy to confuse the two, as they were both born in Ohio in the 1830s, both lived in Illinois for a time, and both ended up in Kansas. The fact that their names are so similar also adds to the confusion.
However, unless Abel was leading a double life (which is not impossible, I suppose), these are two different Abels. The differences are as follows.
Abel Carnes buried in Leavenworth, KS
Since this Abel is not in the tree I have been researching, I have less information. Basically just enough to know he's not "my Abel." If he's yours, I encourage you to take the information below and run with it.
US Census 1870: Abel is listed as Abel Carnes, born 1834 Ohio, Current Residence: Illinois. Other members of the household include: Wife - Louisa, 31yrs; Children - Mathias, 12yrs and Elizabeth, 10yrs. Also listed is Besson Wilson. Relationship to family not noted.
US Census 1880: Abel is listed as Abel Carns, born 1832 Ohio. Current Residence: East Oakland,Coles,Illinois. Other members of the household include: Wife - Louisa, 46 yrs; Child - Mathis, 22 yrs; and Abel's mother - Elizabeth Pope, 79 yrs (Yes, it does say this is Abel's mother specifically - perhaps she remarried or something)
US Census 1910: Abel is listed as Abel Carnes, b. 1836 Ohio; Residence: Delaware, Leavenworth,KS. No other household members listed. Marital Status: Divorced (Maybe Louisa found out about Mary and the other family and they really were the same person?? Like I said, not impossible)
Abel Curnes of Norton,KS
This person is my boyfriend's 4th great grandfather by way of his daughter Barbara "Barbie" Curnes Berry Leonard, hence my interest.
US Census 1870: Abel is listed as Abel Kern, born 1826 Ohio, Current Residence: Iowa. Other members of the household include: Wife - Mary, 30yrs; Children - Lavina, 11yrs; Barbay, 9yrs; George, 8 yrs; Galle, 7yrs; Cora, 1m.
US Census 1880: Abel is listed as Abel Curnes, born 1836 Ohio, Current Residence: Grand River, Madison, Iowa. Other members of the household: Wife - Mary, 40yrs; Children - Lavina, 19yrs; Barbie, 18yrs; Gula, 16yrs; Margret, 10yrs; Cora, 7yrs; Charles, 6yrs; Leona, 7m.
Iowa State Census 1885: Abel is listed as Able Curnes, born 1836 Ohio, Current Residence: Pilot Grove, Montgomery, Iowa. Other members of the household: Wife - Mary Ann, 43yrs; Children - Margaret I, 14yrs; Cora A, 12yrs; Charles, 10yrs; Tressia, 5yrs; Virgil O, 2yrs; Barbara I [Curnes] Berry, 20yrs; Gula A [Curnes] Simpson, 21 yrs; Others: Barbara's son/my boyfriend's 2nd Great Grandfather - William W Berry, 1 yrs; Gula's husband - Virgil Simpson, 22 yrs; and Virgil and Gula's daughter - Grace I Simpson, 2 yrs.
US Census 1900: Abel is listed as Abel Curnes, born Nov 1835 Ohio. Current Residence: Garfield & Rockwell Townships, Norton, Kansas. Listed as widowed. Others in household: Virge, b. Aug 1882 Iowa.
