There is no connection whatsoever between Tryntje Van de Lande and the Ostrander family of Ulster County, New York.
A women by this name married a Pieter Pietersen in Amsterdam. This Pieter Pietersen was a furrier and a widower with a daughter from a previous marriage. The primary author of the BIG BOOK (Ostander Family History 1660-1999)made a significant but erroneous presumption to connect Tryntje Van de Lande to a Dutch cadet who came to New Amsterdam in 1660 on the Dutch ship De Bonte Koe with a wife and three children of unknown gender aged 8, 4 and 2 and then disappeared. There is no further record of this mysterious cadet named Pieter Pietersen in the Dutch colony or colonial New York. Nevertheless the cadet somehow became part of an Ostrander family legend that was passed down from generation to generation without any proof. The myth was first debunked by a Traphagen descendant-reseracher (Chris Brooks) in 1999.
Pieter Carstensen was the father of the Pieter Pietersen who married Jan 1679 Rebecca Traphagen and it was this couple who were the progenitors of the Ostrander family in North America. Pieter Carstensen married twice but NEVER to a Tryntje Van de Lande.
Pieter Carstensen married twice in Amsterdam:
1st in 1623 to Tryntje Thyssen of Husum (or Nordstrand), North Frisia and they had 8-10 children. Tryntje Thyssen died before 1654 presumably in Amsterdam
2nd in 1654 to Geesje Jans of Norden, East Frisia. She was the d/o Jan Doets hence her patronymic Jans.
Pieter Carstensen & Geesje Jans had two children:
1. Tryntje Pieters, b. Amsterdam, circa Dec 1654, m. c1672 Hendrick Albertsen Ploeg; and
2. Pieter Pietersen. bpt. 3 July 1657, Amsterdam, m. 1679, Rebecca Traphagen
Pieter Carstensen died in the East Indies circa 1659 leaving two orphaned children in Amsterdam and his widow Geesje Jans remarried in Oct 1660, Arent Teunissen [Pier]. Arent Teunissen, Geesje Jans,Tryntje Pieters and 4-year old Pieter Pietersen came to New Netherland in 1661 on the Dutch ship De St. Jan Baptist. After a two year sojourn on Coney Island the family went to the Village of Wiltwyck (later Kingston) in 1663. By 1670 they were living in Hurley and by 1678/79 Pieter Pietersen and Rebecca Traphagen were living in Westquansengh a region situated about 3-4 miles north of Kingston. At that time Tryntje Piters and her husband Hendrick Albertsen were also residents of Westquansengh.
A note of caution - the BIG BOOK contains a lot of errors and the narrative on the first two generations is primarily fiction so any reader would be wise to verify any and all information included in the Big Book.
The Ostrander Family Association website at:
www.ostrander.org
has a verified account of the 1st and 2nd generations of the Ostrander Family. It can be found in the Genealogy Section under "Articles of Interest"
