I have this info on the Cartens' origins in Ireland:
Mac Artain of Kinelarty
The head of this clan was the chieftan of Cinel Fhaghartaigh which included the present baronies of Kinelarty and Dufferin in
Down and a branch of the sept was one of the principal clans of Oriel or Louth.
In O'Dugan's description of the tribes of Craobh Ruadh, that is the families who possessed the territory anciently occupied by
the Red Branch Knights, he says:
"To MacArtain by charter belongs the intelligent Cinel Fhaghartaigh Champons who have been liberal to clerics and treasures of
hospitality are they."
The clan numbers at present about 3,000 who mostly dwell in Down, Armagh and Dublin. The name is variously rendered in
English as MacCartan, Macartan, McCartney, McArtney, Carten, Carton, Cartan, Cartin, Carty, etc.
