Armstead Carter of Hanover and Chesterfield, VA?
Peyton Carter 12/18/13
I have received the will of Armistead Carter of Chesterfield, dated 12/16/1795. In it, he mentions his wife Elizabeth, his friends Thomas Farmer and Seth Warde, and his brother Robert Carter. Robert is bequeathed land that Armistead owned in "Cammell" [Campbell] County, where Robert "now lives." This does not mean that Armistead comes from Campbell County, Virginia, but simply owned land there.
His inventory of his estate was performed by Thomas B. Claytor, among others. Two children of William Carter of King George County, died 1743, married Claytors:
1. William Carter m. Jane Claytor (mentioned as Jane Carter in the will of her mother, Katherine Clayter, dated 22 June 1720, Westmoreland Co.)
2. Ann Carter married John Claytor
I do not know at this stage if there is a connection, but I have started to look at the area of Westmoreland/King George as a possible origin point.
A granddaughter of William Carter of King George, d.1743, through son Giles Carter, d.1745, married Anthony Gerrard. It appears that the Gerrard family, local to Westmoreland, s connected to the Armistead family (as in Armistead Carter), also local to Westmoreland.
1. Samuel Gerrard m. Jane
2. Hannah Gerrard m. c.1653 Dr. Robert Ellyson (someimtes spelled Ellison or Allison)
3. Hannah Ellyson 1654 - 1728 m. Capt. Anthony Armistead 1640 - 1705 (a possible souorce for the Anthony name as in Anthony Gerrard, who married a daughter of Giles Carter, d. 1745 in King George).
