Ann, thanks for your follow up. I expect there is link, although I don't have Francis in my notes. James and John CARTLEDGE left Manchester in a rush because of the Chartist connection.
Their father was William and the family appears to have gone to Manchester from Stoke or thereabouts. We have a reference to 'the Potteries' but have not nailed anything down on that.
It seems this branch moved from the village of Cartledge in Derbyshire sometime in the 11th or 12 century when Chester was forced off his holdings there. There was a strong link with Chester.
I have clues and indications but nothing solid yet. I am waiting for my brother to contact so I can discuss the information you have supplied. Thanks again
