Hi Jack
These are 2 entries from the 1881 census.

1.This is the entry for Francis senior who was married to Jane Drinkwater. The son Francis who is 14 in this entry was my great grandfather. The elder Francis was the son of Isaac and Mary (I made a mistake in my previous entry).

Hope this is all clear.
Perhaps you didn't realise but I live in England. Only about 20 miles from the small hamlet of Cartledge in Derbyshire, the location of Cartledge HALL. Sorry but it isn't a castle it is a very plain ordinary house built about 500-600 years ago. It has been extended slightly and has had many different uses over the years. I visited it about 15 years ago and subsequently wrote to the owner who kindly sent me some very detailed information about the history of Cartledge Hall. There is no evidence that Cartledges ever lived at the Hall and there is no mention of any Cartledges in the local churchyard.

I have lived in many parts of the country and certainly the areas with the largest population of Cartledges are around Derbyshire and Stoke on Trent. I agree that if we go back far enough then we will probably find a connection to those areas. I have only got safely back to the birth of Francis senior in 1836 and everything is definitely in or around Manchester which is about 30-35 miles away from Cartledge (not a great distance). My connections in Manchester all seem to have worked in the cotton industry. Derbyshire was mining country and Stoke on Trent was pottery so there is no logical connection there.

Anyway I hope this is useful.

Ann
