The man hanged was George Henry Cartledge, the 27 years old navvy of 2 Oak St Shaw, Oldham. He was sentenced to death on the 26 of February 1929 for the murder of his wife and was hanged at Strangeways Prison Manchester on the 4 of April the same year.

There is a fairly full report in the Oldham Evening Chronicle dated 4 April 1929 which is held on microfilm hela at the Local Studies Library on Union St Oldham.

Whilst I am researching the Cartledge name (which is on my wife's side) I have found no connection to the above George.

Good luck with your research

Keith Britain
