cartledge to cartlach...the people who lived by a large body of water on a strip of land with another type of water ie. a swamp, behind them. the strip of land was also gravely thus known as the people of the cartlach.............kind of like between a rock and a hard place. i have dates and names back to the 1500s that may be of help to some. according to what i have heard our ancestors got lazy in spelling the last name by not doting the i . so cartlidge became cartledge all related.
