You asked about James Benjamin Cartledge of the 1870 Census. Following are several additional bits of information I've collected:

1900 Census, Edgefield Co. SC (Talbert), ED 113, p. 7. Cartledge, James B. (50, b. Sep 1849, SC), w. Emma E. (60, b. Jun 1839, SC), d. Coleman, Sarah C. (32, b. Sep 1867, SC).

1910 Census, Edgefield Co. SC, ED 90, p. 3. Cartledge, James B. (60, SC, m1, 38y, farmer), w. Emma E. (70, SC, m2, 38y, mother of 3/2 living), s/d Sarah C. (40, SC, sg, farm laborer).

SC Death Certificate. James Benjamon [sic] Cartledge, w/m, married, born 25 Sep 1849 in Edgefield County, the son of William I. Cartledge (b. Edgefield) and Martha Boyd (b. Edgefield), died 24 Oct 1918 in Edgefield County of apoplexy, burial 25 Oct 1918 at Gilgal by J. S. Strom of McCormick. Informant: G. S. Coleman, McCormick, RFD 3.

I would very much appreciate it if Ms. Day would share the obit she mentioned. (It seems likely that the son mentioned in it could in reality be a step-son, the G. S. Coleman who gave the information in the Death Certificate, and brother of the Sarah Coleman mentioned in the 1900 and 1910 censuses.)

The Thomas you mentioned is in fact Ira Thomas Cartledge, who died on 2 Apr 1927 in Brooks Co. GA. Ira T. was twice married, and left descendants by each wife. I can give you more information if you are interested.
