hi ANN,
Found details of Isaac and Mary Cartledge (40 and 38) on 1841 census, living in Prestwich next to Oldham. They have children Mary 15, David 11, Jane 7, Francis 5, Isaac 2, and Thomas 2 months. The birth cert. for Isaac is in 1838 in Oldham, ref. OBT/1/473 ; also Thomas in 1840. The maiden name of mother was Bryan, and I think Young Isaac dies young - no later trace. Curious thing is that census gives birthplace of both parents as Scotland.
As to most Staffs & Cheshire Cartlidges - they originate from a tiny location outside Leek - saxon word for " stream in rocky ground" I believe.
bye pete
