Samuel, You posted a very informative letter on the Edmund Cartledge - Thornton family connections in Bullock/Barbour Co., AL. <Your aol.com is not working - so here is my reply Posted!> I was in Europe all summer and unable to respond properly. (My first trip over there - friends in Vienna... it was wonderful!)
I have transcribed a lot of the census data. I know you already have it - but there may be a couple you don't have, who knows? I followed some of them down to 1920. Others I lost track of. I'd certainly be glad to share it.
With my research based almost entirely on the census data - I had very few precise dates -birth/marriage/deaths. And none of the maiden names. So, I am very grateful indeed for your note. I need to order the vital records from Alabama. Any ideas about obituaries in that part of the country? Might find some interesting things written up about these families.
By the way, the name Dozier comes from Green H. Thornton's father. Nathaniel is also a common Thornton name, Euphemia and Rhoda's brother was Nathaniel H. Thornton.
As I said earlier, I have no proof of Rhoda Thornton being a Skelton. Circumstancial. The name came at me from an unknown source within the Thornton researchers. But the more I look into it, the better the idea sounds. I am in touch via the web with a Dr. Earl Skelton and we've been beating the brush to make the connection. He's tracked most of the Skeltons across the south. The following census report is my best clue - but concidering all the other quasi-facts, it ain't bad:
1850 GA Census - Muscogee Co. p.419;136 - 8the District (28 Aug 1850 Green H. Thornton 54m KY farmer 3000 Rhoda 43f Elbert Co., GA Euphemia 20f AL Blackstone R. 16m Muscogee Co., GA Green G. 14m Muscogee Co., GA Nathan 12m Muscogee Co., GA Rhoda 10f Muscogee Co., GA
NEARBY: p.418;117 James Glenn 34m Putnam Co., GA; *Amilia 32f Elbert Co., GA; Oliver (?) P. 7m Musc, GA; Wissett (?) 5m Musc, GA;Albert 3m Musc,GA; Henry 1m Musc, GA; and Harriet Skelton 24f AL. *difficult to read - but probably Emily.
Muscogee Co., GA Marriages: Glenn, James to Skelton, Emily 6/7/1839
Anyway, I thank you again. Never ceases to amaze me that through the computer we can locate those who are researching the exact same people - from one hundred and fifty years ago! I'll keep snooping through the library (Los Angeles - lots of microfilm) - perhaps I'll find something interesting - and send it along. If you have any of the particulars typed out on the computer, I'd like to see it - such as the birth/marriage/death sources, etc.
Best regards, Randall Miller
