Interesting that his tombstone says he was the son of G W and N A.I would like to offer a possible candidate - George Cartmill, born about 1787 in Botetourt Co and apparently died there before 1820.If George had a son and George died young perhaps the son was raised by one of the relatives, perhaps Henry and Isabella. This is what I know about George Cartmill.

James Cartmill Captain, 12 Jul 1813 – 28 Sep 1813, McDowell’s Flying Camp.

George Cartmill Pvt. McDowell’s Flying Camp.

These men are probably all sons of Lt. Henry Cartmill of Botetourt County, VA.George Cartmill does not seem to fit with any of the other Cartmill families in Botetourt County.George Cartmill apparently died fairly young, before 1820, as there is no further trace of this George Cartmill.Lt. Henry is known to have four sons in later years: James, John, Thomas and Henry, Jr.However, in the Lt. Henry Cartmill household in the 1810 census there was an “extra” adult male in the household (five total besides Lt. Henry) and the “extra” male could very well have been George.

This is Lt. Henry Cartmill, son of Henry Cartmill, Sr.Lt. Henry had about 400 acres on Purgatory Creek at this time (200 acres inherited from his father in 1786 plus a 200 acre grant in 1789).Lt. Henry Cartmill married Sarah Anderson 27 May 1776 in Botetourt County.
The above children are probably as follows:James, abt 1778,George, abt 1787,Ann, abt 1788,Elizabeth, abt 1790,John, abt 1792,Thomas, abt 1794 and Henry Jr., abt 1795.Another daughter, Mary Polly Cartmill, married James Sisson in 1807.
The relationship of the son George is unproven and George appears to have died young, before 1820.George does not show up in later censuses (1820 or later) nor is he mentioned in his fathers quit claim deed of 1831.Did George die in the war of 1812, or sometime before 1820?
