My grandmother's grandmother was Eleanor Cartner who was the youngest daughter of Thomas Cartner.
Thomas Cartner appears on the census at Townhead, Houghton up to 1851. He appears to have died in 1860, and the family headed by his wife Elizabeth, appear in the 1861 Scottish Census in Gretna. She was back in Cumberland, at Metal Bridge in 1871 and died in 1874.
John Cartner was at Steelbeck with siblings Jane Mary and Joseph in 1851, and with Sibella Irving whom he married in 1859, in the 1861 census. From the 1871 census they are at Moodlaw. He died in 1877, she in 1905.
Eleanor, my grandmother's grandmother married Fergus Steel in 1869. They emigrated to Powder Point, Duxbury, MA in 1890, leaving John Steel, my great-gramdfather at Metal Bridge. The last US Census they appear on is the 1920 one.
