Casner Family in NJ

I am trying to research the Casner line in NJ. My great great grandfather, Stephen H. Casner, and his wife Rosabelle lived in and around the Asbury Park area in the late 19th and early 20th century. There is a Stephen H. Casner listed on the U.S. census as one of the sons of Joseph and Alice Casner; based on Stephen's age, I assumed this Stephen was my great great grandfather. I can't confirm this.

I would like to research my line back to the time they came to America and to find out whether the name is of German or Dutch origin. I would like suggestions on how to continue my research. Has anyone had any luck in tracing their Casner family back to its origins?
