Casner Family History

I am trying to research my Casner ancestors back to the date they came to America. I am trying to find out if they emigrated from Germany and what the original spelling of the name was.

I have very little information on my Casner ancestors. I can confirm that Stephen H. Casner married Rosabelle Reid, and they lived in NJ in the Asbury Park area for awhile. I have searched federal census records and found a Stephen H. listed as the son of Joseph and Alice Casner. Although the Stephen Casner listed on the census as the son of Joseph and Alice Casner appears to be my great great great grandfather (based on the age listed on the census), I can't confirm the connection. The census record was for Monroe Township, NJ.

If Joseph and Alice Casner are the parents of my great great great grandfather, my search has ended here. I don't know how to proceed to trace Joseph Casner and his Casner line back to the time they came to America.

I would appreciate any tips on how to proceed with my search.
