My husband says that his family is of German descent. When his mother died we found a book written in German and a handwritten paper that is in German along with some newspaper clippings. We don't know what the relevance of these are as we can't read them but they meant something to someone in the family. In chasing down land records and looking at headstones we have found different variations on the spelling of the Casner name. Casner, Carsner, Cassner and Casnar. I'm sure part of this is just a sign of the times when education was less school books and more hard manual labor. For anyone who is interested these are the facts that I have for our branch of the Casner family tree:
Birth and death dates are as follows:

George Casner, born 4-4-1800, died 3-18-1880.

Mary A. Casner, born 1808, died 10-4-1862, w/o George.

Cathrine Lewis Casner, born 6-6-1827, died 2-3-1894,
w/o George.

George Casner, infant died 7-13-1850, age 8 months 16
days, son of George and Mary.

Hester Dubois, born 9-3-1863, died 10-8-1908, Daughter
of George and Cathrine.

Emily Flanagan, Died 12-24-1861, she is listed as 56
years 11 months and 21 days and as the wife of A.D.
This would give her a birth date of January 3, 1805 as
near as I can figure. Since her father George was born
in 1800 it wouldn't be possible for her to be born in

Lucy Randolf, born 6-4-1866, died 2-9-1943, daughter
of George and Cathrine.

My husbands lineage that I can be sure of so far is
his mother:

Myrtle Magdaline Casner born April 10, 1923, died
October 15, 2003.She was the daughter of:

Ramsey Casner born October 23, 1896, died October 22,
1972. The son of:

Andrew and Mary(Burkett) Casner. I don't have dates
for these.

Andrew had one brother, Samuel A Casner who resided in
Salem, Il. His wife was Nellie, she passed away in

I think that Andrew Casner (listed above) was born in 1871 to a Thomas Casner but I haven't chased this down yet. I have an 1880 census that lists an Andrew J age 9. His parents were Thomas and Harriet. Thomas was listed as 34 years old in 1880 so he would have been born about 1846.
