I had some luck in finding my early eastern American Indians (even when they weren't Cherokee) in the applications to the Eastern Cherokee Rolls. No longer do I have access, but the actually images of each applicants papers are at footnote dot com. Each application had 1-5 pages or more of info, including some with grandparents names filled out.
I can see that my Halifax Co VA Cassada were married into other families who had part Indian; although usually very hard to prove, it's my experience that these families went on down the line intermarrying with other part Indian lines so that the percentage of Indian per person was not seen on paper but through appearance and family stories.
Best of luck
