Cassels, Cassillis, Cassilis, Castles
The family apparently can be traced back to Ireland coming to what is now Strathclyde in about the 1300s.The Irish Gaelic name was "cinneidigh" (ugly headed)thus became part of the Kennedy Clan in Scotland.John Kennedy aquired lands at Cassillis in 1360.John Kennedy had a son, Gilbert.Gilbert's son, James married Princess Mary, second daughter of Robert III.Their son, another Gilbert, was created Lord Kennedy in 1457.The third Lord Kennedy was Created the Earl of Cassillis in 1509.The tenth Earl, with architect Robert Adam, built the Castle at Culzean along the south western coast, near Ayrshire.William IV created the twelfth Earl Marquess of Ailsa.Out of all of this many branches were created as Cassels, Cassillis, Cassils, Cassel, Castle and so on.My brance of the family came from Scotland to Ontario, thence to Portlane, Ore, and finally to Seattle.
There are numerous Cassels in and around Columbia, SC and Lexington County, SC.
