Hi, I am another cousin. My gg grandfather was George Washington Cowan, my g grandfather was George Stewart Cowan, my grandmother was Afton Cowan, and my mother was Catherine Hammett. Afton abandoned her children when my mother was 3. Her grandmother, Metta, took care of her until her death when my mother was 5. At that point, her aunt Carrie Belle Cowan brought her to Maryland and raised her. I knew little of the Cowan family except that they were from Morristown and that my g grandfather's name was Stewart. From my research I found George W Cowan, but didn't know much else. In December, on a trip returning to Maryland from Memphis, we drove through Morristown just to see what it was like. I bought a map and found a Cowan Lane. We located it and I walked up to one of the houses and spoke to a man who turned out to be Donald Cowan, the grandson of George Washington Cowan. I also talked to Elsie Cowan, age 97, who was also a granddaughter. I then got connected with Warren through the message boards. It's so great to know I have Cowan cousins out there! We're trying to unravel the mystery of the Cowans from Wythe County, VA. Laura Cowan Cooper and several others have been communicating about that. So far it looks as if Elizabeth, the mother of George Washington, had him out of wedlock. It's also beginning to look as if her father was James Cowan, although it hasn't been verified. Please e-mail me at dgair1@jhmi.edu if you have additional information on these lines. Thanks, Debi Notify Administrator about this message?
