Casleton, Castleton

Do any of you have connections to Christopher Casleton of Herkimer Co, NY? He was born in 1839 and ended up by 1860 in Jackson Co. IL. He served in the Union during the Civil War, went home to IL to marry Louisa "Toad" Davis. We believe his father was Walter Casleton. Family tradition says they were from Germany and took the name Casleton after the town in NY called Casleton. However, later documents from IL say that they were from England. One line of the family changed the spelling to Castleton. When asked why they added the extra "T", my cousin said he dad say everyone tried to add it anyway so he just accomodated them. Any help on this line would be greatly appreciated.
