Hello Simon,
William Cathcart was a soldier in the R.N.I.R. I have been told that this stands for Royal Northern Infantry Regiment.
In the early records in Cape Breton his name appears as William Catgut. The Cathcart name was frequently mispelled in the records here. William Cathcart and Bridget Lee were married in the Anglican Church but the Cathcarts were Catholic. There might not have been a Catholic Church here when they married.
I look forward to any information you may find over there. Hopefully you will have good luck!
Thanks, Vince MacNeil
