Notice the spelling of the last name! That's like how it is spelled in the early records here in Nova Scotia. I see it as Catgut in CB and various other spellings too. That spelling was used for the sons in the early records as well. I wonder if there is such a surname?? Have you seen that version of this surname before in your studies of Cathcarts? Are there any such things as enlistment papers? There may be pension records somewhere as well. He likely collected some type of pension for his service.
