Sir John Lees and Mary Cathcart Lees had 6 children, their youngest, Thomas Orde Hastings Lees' daughter Charlotte wed Rev. Dr. George Sydney Smith,[prof. of Greek & Latin Trinity College Dublin] in 1838. Their son Dr. Thomas Orde Lees Smith, b. 1841,in the Lees family home at Blackrock, Co. Dublin, brought his sons including the yougest Walter Boyle Smith, to Australia in 1886, then San Francisco Calif. in 1903; Walter's son, Roy Lees Smith, b. May 27,1924 San Francisco, d. Jan.22, 1999 Las Vegas, is father of me and my 7 younger brothers & sister.
Sir John Lees 135pp Diary of 1777-1797, Trinity College Library document 9875, page 31 says Mary Cathcart Lees' sister married Captain Mackay in 1786, and Sir John Lees bought them a house in Stephen's Green, Dublin.
In Nov 1785, (p.28, the Diary) Sir John Lees paid 107 pounds British "to the 28th Regiment for the funeral expenses of my brother-in-law Capt. Cathcart-This young man, good-natured & amiable yet improvident having entered but too readily into the vices & dissipation which prevailed in the American Army while commanded by Sr. Wm. Howe ran thro' in the course of a few years the very handsome fortune which his father left him in so much that some bills drawn by him recently before his death on his agent Mr. Sinclair in London were returned for non-payment.
He fevered at St'Kitts(Caribbean island)and died suddenly. He was beloved by his fellow Captains..."
the Lt. Paymaster of the Regiment was Meacham, and the Major of the Regiment was Major Roberts. The British Library has rosters all all military menonline.
