Southern Plantation owning Scottish Cathcarts

My mother's side of the family is named Cathcart, a name that family stories say came from a Scottish plantation owner who fell in love with my mother a slave, (you know how stories get exaggerated) so when she bared him children, he freed her and gave her a patch of land + his name.

I was just curious if there were any Scottish Cathcarts out there who could verify a clan line out in Southern America. It would be nice to know some of the Cathcart history before that. My family is very proud of the name.
