My father, Boyt H. Cathey, 84, passed away Monday morning, November 28th, nine days after he broke his hip from a fall and had surgery Sunday, Nov. 20th. We had held his assisted living room at White Oak Estates in Spartanburg with the hope he could return after four to six weeks of physical therapy in the skilled nursing center. Unfortunately, Boyt did not have the necessary health to recover from the stress of these events.
Fortunately, Carlene (Boyt's sister) and husband Pascal, were able to talk to Boyt briefly, with some assistance, on the phone on Saturday and express their love. Kathy and I had prayer with Boyt and his best friend in Spartanburg from his church. Then we both gave him a hug before we said goodbye. We were exhausted from attending to his care after the surgery and felt that he was in good care in the skilled nursing facility at WOE. Although we were surprised that my father passed away so unexpectedly we feel he was ready and did not have to suffer any longer.
Boyt had a living will and we did our best to make sure it was followed. He requested to be cremated and his ashes will soon be placed next to Mary Grace Cathey's ashes at the Mimosa Columbarium in Davidson, NC. There ashes will be together.
We placed an obituary in the Charlotte, Greensboro, Greenville, and Spartanburg newspapers. We have completed plans for a non-traditional service in Davidson, NC.
