Hello Sherry,
Thank you for your kind words regarding my father.

For those who may be following this post, I have transferred the boxed paper files and electronic data to John Cathey of Greer, SC. He has been gracious in taking off of our hands a (literally) truckload of boxes of paper and electronic data yet we still have some additional data we have yet to determine the value of. (Perhaps one day I will focus more on the record numbers but I suspect you know who I am talking about.) I CREATED AN ACCOUNT ON GENEALOGY.COM TODAY!!!!

Seems strange my father never asked me if I wanted an account. The postings are pretty incredible. I am proud to see so much activity. This forum is new to me and I have already learned quite a bit. Unfortunately I am not particularly interested in genealogy; however, I am interested in making sure that what remains of my father’s data is in good hands.

I will depend on the collective Cathey community to help me with this. Also, I am anticipating that there might be a controlled and proper way to do this. I will continue to work with John Cathey on how to best do this.

John Cathey, my wife Kathy Wheale, and myself (Robert A. Cathey – Bob) have a common interest which is travel.

Before I met my wife I drove to California and back to NC at the age of 20, camping out of a tent much to my parent’s dismay. My wife and I met on a camping trip, in tents, and enjoyed canoeing together. My wife has always loved travel, and during our marriage, she worked as a regional travel representative for Trafalgar Tours and Orient Cruise Lines. As a result of her interest in international travel, and my interest in powerboat (cruiser) travel we have had a very interesting “Volume I” of our travels. This includes boating from DC to Key West on the ICW, the length of the Tennessee River, Okeechobee Waterway, St. Lawrence Waterway, Erie Canal, St. Johns River, FL, Canal Narrow Boat travel in Britain and numerous other destinations. Now that we are retired, we plan to start “Volume II” which has started with a four month “volunteer” contract with the Army Corps of Engineers (I know our current President has a problem pronouncing this, Heh, Heh) on Lake Hartwell, SC, at Twin Lakes Campground as campground hosts. We planned this job to be near my father during his health issues. Now it appears that we are able to travel the country, possibly selling our house, and traveling domestically for a change, repeating some of my travel when I was 20 years old, in addition to new travel via boat in Canada.

I know that my interests, and those of my wife, may not have been of particular interest to my father, Boyt, but I think during this unique time in history, that the generational gap is closing and people in my generation, and younger generations, need to be open to these activities and adventures. Surely the technology is available, more and more people have access to computers, and there are ways for Cathey’s to “glue” themselves to each other whether it be via the adventures I have mentioned for my wife and I, or younger generations who can learn from us and our mistakes and/or adventures. Think of all of the progress the Cathey family has made. The Cathey “Clan” has a unique opportunity via “social media”, and other opportunities, to make connections and share resources. For example, we might be interested in meeting Cathey’s, from across the nation, in our travel ventures. I have stories to tell, and I am sure other Catheys have stories to tell. Heck, as the world/country become smaller, we will likely need to stick together to make the best of the world in which we live.
