According to Alfred Decker Keator (ADK) Hiram Cator was in the 1850 census as a lumberman residing at a hotel in Janesville, WI and later Hiram moved to Center Twp., WI and was a farmer. I could not find Hiram or any Pendell in the 1850 census. I did find a John Kimbell, age 48, born NH; a Lucy Kimbell, age 48, born NH; a Lucy M. Kimbell, age 14, born NY.
Speculation: Lucy's middle name is Melvina and she used Melvina to distinguish herself from her mother.
In the 1860 census it shows Hiram Cator, age 38, born NY; Melvina (no last name) age 25, born NY. This is consistent with Lucy M. Kimbell's 1850 census information.
"The Janesville Gazette" has Hiram Cator marrying Melvina Kimbell, 15 Jun. 1854.
ADK has Hiram Cator marrying Melvina Kimbell, 15 Jan. 1854.
The Mormons have Hiram Cator marrying Melvina Kimbell, 15 Jan. 1854.
It stands to reason (mine) that the Melvina mentioned in the 1860 census is Lucy Melvina Kimbell.
If this is true, then the Melvina in the 1870 and 1880 census is also Lucy Melvina Kimbell and all the children are Hiram's and Lucy Melvina Kimbell's
The question is, why did Geroge list his parents as Hiram and Lillie Pendell on his marriage certificates? It could be that Geroge named his current parents, if Hiram married a second time.
Speculation: After the 1880 census Hiram and Lucy divorced and Hiram married Lillie Pendell. I say they divorced because, according to ADK, Melvina did not die untill 1901 (Minocqua, WI) and Hiram died in 1903 (Chicago, IL).
What indications do you have as to Hiram's second marriage to Melvina Pendell other than the appearance of Betsy D. Pendell in the 1860 census in the Hiram Cator household?
Do you have George's birth or death certificate? If so, who are the listed parents?
Who are the listed parents on Charles' death certificate? Do you have Charles' birth or marriage certificate? If so, who are the parents?
Do you know anything at all about Winifred Tracy (Charles' first wife)?
Did you find "The Janesville Gazette" on the internet or did you subscribe to the publication?
I am still looking for answers at this end.
