Hi,
I have found there are not that many people who have the same spelling as we do for Caughman. From what research I have done on my family goes back to a John Caughman in Kentucky around 1797. Part of that family moved to around what is now Fayettville, Arkansas. I have been there and found gravestones and talked to one relative on the phone that was still alive. My greatgrandfather homesteaded in Colorado after the Civil War. That is where I grew up.
As for coming from Ireland. I did find an Annie Holiday that married into the family whose father came from Ireland. Also they spelling of Caughman seems to go along with an Irish background.
I grew up in Colorado, but I now live in Florida and 'commute' between there and NY. I am not sure if we are of the same 'clan', but thought it would be fun to share what I have.
Sincerely,
Rita Caughman Fleming
