I have been researching various Census' searching for the Caughman name and they seem to be in quite a few places.
Here are some of the Earliest ones I could find.

1790 Frederick Co., Maryland (town is unknown)
Jacob Caughman w/ 1-0-1-0-0

1810 Nelson Co., KY (unk. town)
Jacob Caughman w/ 0-0-2-0-1 males and 1-2-0-1-1-0-1 females

1820 Lexington, Fayette Co., KY
David Caughman w/ 1-0-0-0-1-0-5-0-1-1-0-0-3 males
and 0-0-0-1-1-0-1- females (what was he running...a Boarding House???)

1820 Lexington, Scott Co., Indiana
Mary Caughman w/ 0-0-1-1-0-0-1-2 males and 0-1-0 females

1830 Salt Creek, Holmes Co., OH
Jacob Caughman w/ 2-1-0-0-0-1 males and 0-1 -0 females
Moses Caughman w/ 0-0-0-0-1-males and I didn't note the females.

1830 Lexington, Lexington Co., SC
John Caughman with 1-1-1-1-0-0-1 males and 2-1-1-1-0-0-1- females.
(this is 3rd grt.grandfather)

1830 same Census
West Caughman
George Caughman

1830 same Census
Daniel Caughman
Andrew Caughman
There are lots more and several John Caughman's
I saw a Samuel Caughman too.
In 1810 there were Caughman's in KY, PA, and VA.
Most of them were in PA which had a large population of German immigrants.

Just as a note...while researching in Mass. this last month, I noticed a Huge amount of CAUGHLIN's from Ireland.
Could be the name was spelled like that at one time and was misspelled along the way...just a thought.
