I've consentrated in counties in Georgia that hhad both Cotherns (and all related spellings) and Gates families.I find both a William Gates Sr and Jr. in Franklin Co. Ge. around 1802 to 1806.I also find a William Cothen Sr and Jr in Franklin Co.But both Williams were somewhat prominate and there is enought written on them to exclude them from my list. But other of the Cothen family might have had another son named William.
