Regarding your question about running across "Abair" spelled as "Abare": Until I legally changed the spelling of my name back to the original French form, I was "Jerome Abare." There were -- and still are -- Abares in Vermont (and scattered across the country as well, of course), as well as Abairs. At least some of the latter are my cousins, though I haven't traced along those lines to find the precise connexion yet. An Andrew Abair and his family, for example, who owned a small farm north of Waterbury Center, VT, were cousins of mine. Good folks. If you want to compare notes, feel free to write.
