I have documentaqtion that The Alphin's did come from Ireland and Scotland. In Ireland the name was spelled Olphan, and in Scotland it was MacAlphin. The first king of Scotland was a MacAlphin and yes there alot of different varitations in the spellings. Most people who came to the U.S. changed the spelling just to get jobs. If you'll go to the National Archives in Washington D.C. you can look this up for your selves. Realtions in Scotland are MacGregors and MacDonald's.
