John Bale was born in 1836 (who knows where?)
I have his marriage certificate to Julia Anna Goldsworthy -1865 that states he is a journeyman tailor, widower, and his fathers name is Henry Bale, Occupation Gentleman. They were married in Falmouth England. They produced 2 children, John Henry b. 1866 and Anna Mary b. 1871
the 1871 census for st Austell Cornwall has Julia as the head of household and in the margin it says husband pauper bodmin asylum (looked in the census for the Bodmin asylum and no john bale there). 1881 census for Julia has her also listed as head but written in is a note that states "abandoned" and 1891 census has Julia as a Widow. Family legend has it that John left Julia when things got rough to go to sea as a china clay merchant. When Julia said she didn't want to go because of the small children John found some red head to take her place. I have never been able to find this elusive John Bale in any census in Cornwall England with a father named Henry who was of gentleman quality. Maybe he was a by-blow? I did manage to find a John Bale in st Giles on heath as a border/journeyman tailor of the right age and it states he was born in Bodmin Cornwall. Looking up all baptisms in Bodmin Cornwall not a single John Bale with a father named Henry etc.. My brick wall!! can anyone help?
