This is so interesting! Oral tradition can get garbled over the generations, but the copy of the typewritten genealogy I have (dated 1899) also mentioned the Braytons came from France, but thought they came with William the Conqueror and the Normans! I bet your story is closer to the truth! Many French Hugonauts fled to England in the 16th and 17th centuries. It may also explain why Francis chose to settle in Rhode Island, which was a colony free of religious persecution (unlike Massachusetts Bay and the other colonies). Unfortunately I was too young to have known my great aunt Edna, who was the repositor of the information for our branch of the Brayton family (my grandfather, Charles Alembert Brayton, died before I was born), to have heard the stories she knew about. I think oral tradition holds more information than many historians think. What else do you remember hearing?
