I have no concrete proof so, not sure of the exact origin, but ran across an interesting variation of our name under "The Ancient History of the Distinguished Surname CAPLICE. Caplice has a home page.

States name was of Viking and/or Norman origin, landed in Scotland abt 870 AD, drifted over to Gloucestershire about 13th century...now the neat part is that the notorious Earl of Essex, descended from the Lord Mayor of London, was a Capel, and he was reported to have had an affair with Queen Elizabeth I.
