Abraham Chatterton was born about 1767 and died in Whiting,
Addison County, VT on 9 April 1832, aged 65,
according to his tombstone. He married Lydia Stone, a daughter
of Stukely Stone, on 20 January 1793. Their first child,
Wellcome Betts Chatterton, was born on 7 October 1793 in Whiting.
Wellcome moved to Eden, Erie Co., NY and is my direct ancestor.
Another child was Capalona Chatterton, born 25 March 1805.
Sometimes her name was recorded as Happyloney.
Abraham's parentage has not been proven. The use of the name
"Betts" for a child points to a Westchester County, NY, origin.
As a speculation only (not even a hypothesis), perhaps
Abraham Chadderdon, born 1767, was the son of Betts Chadderdon,
the loyalist who left his lands and went to Canada.
Another speculation is that Abraham Chatterton was a son
of Joseph and Mary (Odell) Chatterton. This couple had a
son Betts Chatterton who was born 22 November 1764, Poughkeepsie.
He married Mary Valense and named a daughter Capalona - a most
unusual name. The Poughkeepsie records are fragmentary.
In the process of researching this family I copied all the
entries in The State of Vermont General Index to Vital Records
(LDS Microfilm 0,027,503) which mention the name. Most of
the people originated from New Haven, though.
Any assistance proving the ancestry of Abraham Chatterton will
be much appreciated.
