We have done a pretty good job of tracking the Chaters back to 1800, then it gets a little sketchy and we totally loose the trail by 1740.
My Grandmother was Beatrice Chater, she came to America in 1911 and married Robert Herman Gould in 1912. She was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, Englad. I am looking for her ancestors and www.ancestry.com is a little weak before 1800. I would appreciate any help anyone can give me. The detals I have follow.
Her Father was:
THOMAS WILLIAM CHATER
Parents: JOSEPH W CHATER & CAROLINE CAUSET
Birth: 23 Feb 1849 Birmingham, Warwickshire, England
Death: 12 Jan 1910 England
Father of Thomas (1849-1910) was:
JOSEPH WILLIAM CHATER
Parents: THOMAS CHATER & MARIAH
Birth: 1826 Aston, Warwickshire, England
Before that, I have:
Thomas Chater who was born in 1801 in Aston, Warwickshire, England; his father was Thomas William Chater who was born in 1765 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England also and died in 1849; and then his father was Thomas Chater (very creative names) who was born 1740, also in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England and died in 1812 in Olney, Buckinghamshire, England.
It appears Thomas Chater (1740-1812) was married 3 times: Hannah Haywood abt. 1766; Hannah Nickol; and the most important one, who is the mother of our heir, is unknown. abt 1760 (she probably died in childbirth around 1770). It is entirely possible that these are 3 different Thomas' rather than 1 Thomas and 3 wives.
I have second cousins who probably are still living in Newcastle, but I do not know how to find them. I have looked on the internet. Their names are Ian and Keith Davis (in their 50's)and could be living with thier father, Jackie Davis, if he is still alive he would be in his 80's. I believe they are unmarried and are not doing genealogy, but might know of other relatives who would be interested. If you know how to find an email address in England, please advise.
