The names Mary, and Jones and William are quite common in Churchill history but I have no Upshaw in my information. There are Upham's and Upton's.

On the Christening you mention, it would depend upon the family but in the 18th Century many Churchills would have had the Anglican belief in Infant Baptism which was normally performed after the baby's birth and after the mother recovered. The exception was a problem with the birth or delivery, in which case the baby could be baptized immediately after birth and even if still-born. In Anglican belief the baptism could be performed by non-clergy such as a parent or mid-wife. If it did not survive, the baby was sometimes re-baptized by clergy before burial. What you say suggests that the baby did not survive.
