I am from the Virginia Crimmels. My grandfather's great-grandfather (Johnnes Grimmel) was born in Schonstadt Hessen (its now part of Germany) in 1802. We discovered that the name was Grimmel, and it was changed upon arival to America. There are still Grimmels and Krimmels living in the German state of Hesse. My father (lots of research on Crimmel name) has never been able to directly connect the PA Crimmels to the Virginia (actually WV) Crimmels. His theory is that the PA branch was started when a Hessian mercenary came to the colonies to fight for the British in the Revolutionary War. The Virginia branch arrived in America around the 1850s. Have any of the PA Crimmels done any YDNA testing? I have had 12 markers tested -- Haplogroup R1b subclade R1b1 -- and plan to eventually have more tested. The name John or Johan or Johnnes is very popular with Crimmel/Krimmel/Grimmel. My cousin, Uncle, and grandfather's brother are all named John -- but they are from the Virginia Branch.
