The discussion continues to be very interesting. I have traced my acestrage back to 1740 in Alsace (spelled Ehret), however some additional history studies suggest that the Alsace region in France (formerly Gernmany) could have been exposed to the Celts of Scotland and Ireland, the latter would have been the Chrisians in AD and the former the Celtic Druids or non-Christian. In Alsace as in Russia, there are Ehret's that are Catholic and Ehret's that are lutheran or another protestant religion. There are Errets in Austrailia, in several states of the USA and still in Southern Russia althogth those that did not migrate to USA from South Russia were more than likely one of more of the 20 million Ukrainians killed by Stalin.
There is an Ehret genealogy website. Alfred and his wife and son are attempting to aggregate all derivations of the name into one global family tree. You might want to contact him.
