According to the Oregon Donation Land Claim papers which he and his heir filled out:

Samuel Gazley b.1785 Dutchess Co.,New York arrived in Oregon 9-10-1853,where he secured donation land claim #602 in Douglas Co.,Oregon on 6-28-1854. He died 7-25-1857,on land claim.

5-15-1863 James F.Gazley,s/o Samuel Gazley,dec'd states: His deceased father had two children living, himself age 35 years and Sarah Jane,age 24,widow of William S.Ramsey,Esq. He states his father was a widower and had been married but once,had resided on land claim 6-28-1854 to day of his death.

5-99-1864 James F.Gazley signed O/A as son and heir of Samuel Gazley.

Affidavit signed by:Samuel B.Briggs,John Fullerton (who also gave death date),Charles W.Beckworth.

NOTE: Since the son did not mention his mother,she probably died before Samuel went to Oregon. As you will see James went to Oregon before his father.

James F.Gazley b.1822 Cortland Co.,N.Y. m.Adeline E. 9-17-1848 Bradford Co.,Penn. They arrived in Oregon 4-1-1851,taking donation land claim #601 in Douglas Co.,Oregon on 1-10-1852.

10-10-1866 James F.Gazley gave aff. that "about 10-1-1864 he applied to Roseburg,(Douglas Co) Oregon Land Office for certificate of my father's and my own donation claim,and believe certificates were lost between land offce and my residence."
