I am looking for a Leah GETTY or GETTIE, the mother of my husband's great-grandfather, Jerome Bonapart MARTIN, b. 1853. He is my "stone wall."
Recently my mother-in-law found a privately printed memoir that gives a description of Jerome's family. It was written by a 90 year old lady, remembering information told to her as a child. It is my only clue.
The memoir says that Jerome was son of a woman named Leah GETTIE, who lived in the state of Indiana. I am supposing she married a MARTIN. Could be wrong, of course.
Leah was supposed to have had seven sons and either a daughter or a niece named Delphia. The only names remembered for the sons were Irvin, Milton, Andrew, and John.
Three of the boys were supposed to have gone to West Virginia to work in the coal mines. One went west to Washington, and the author of the memoir associates Delphia with this son, and with a blackberry ranch, perhaps near Puyallup.
Another boy is supposed to have gone to California.
Irvin supposedly came east and settled in Punxsutawney, Pa. I have found no records for him in the census indexes.
Jerome came east and settled in Centre County, Pa.
Does anyone in this family sound familiar to anyone? With so many unusual names and places one would think this would be easy. Not so.
