Dot,

The only reference I have seen is that ZEMEH GUDGER was on the list of signatures for the petition of 1791 for the incorporation of Buncombe County. William Gudger also signed. I believe ZEMEH must have been a male because in those times women did not sign petitions. I have read that settlers from Scotland emigrated directly to the hilly country of VA and NC before the Revolution and fought on the side of the Americans against the English. Although I am confident William Gudger lived in southern VA before NC, I have not been able to find any reference to William or Zemeh in VA. I did find that Benjamin Gudger took the oath of allegiance in Pittsylvania County, VA about 1777. He was I think, the younger brother of William, and shows up later in Buncombe County. JOY
