The key to determining the true origin of
the Hertzog (this is the correct German
spelling used by the family)/Hartsoe/Hartsaw/
Hartso/Hartsough family of ORANGE and CHATHAM
Cos., NC is found in two deeds. The first
is a 1770 Orange County deed in which
Frederich Hertzog (Frederick Hartsoe) gives
his eldest grandchildren John White and
Philip Syler/Siler a tract of land "for love
and affection." Then in a 1787
Chatham County Deed (Orange County had been
divided) John Philip
Hartso (Johann Philip Hertzog), Hannah
Hartso (his wife), John White, Jane White
(his wife), Philip Sylor (Siler) and Mary
Sylor (his wife) sell that land on Rocky
River which was left to them by Friedrich
Hertzog. Friedrich was the father of
Johann Philip Hertzog and the grandfather
of Philip Seyler/Siler and of Johann Weiss/
John White.
See my other post on this forum for more
info. Incidentally the name means "Duke"
in German. In German it can also correctly
be spelled Herzog.
I am a direct descendant of Friedrich Hertzog.
