A family mystery has surfaced concerning my granddaddy's oldest brother, William Arthur Hardy (b 19 Mar 1843 Edgefield District, SC, d 1 Feb 1917 Cherokee County, TX and buried in the Cook Family Cemetery near Alto). He married 7 Nov 1866 Jane Elizabeth Jennings, daughter of John and Lucy Wills Jennings of Edgefield District. They had at least three children before 1880: John Hillery (b 9 Aug 1867 Sardis, Cherokee County, TX, d 9 Aug 1947); Bunyon (b 1 Sep 1875, d 29 Sep 1945); and Coleman (b 23 Dec 1877, d 3 Jul 1954). In addition, they had three girls who died as infants. That is where the water gets murky! In the 1880 census of Columbia County, FL, William Arthur is living with wife Susan (identified in Jennings and Healan family records as being Susan or Kathleen Healan), the three above named boys, and another boy "no name," who was later named Guy. Guy was born 10 May 1880. Was Susan Healan Hardy his mother, or was Jane Elizabeth Jennings Hardy his mother? Apparently, William and Susan had two infant girls together who died as infants. According to some Healan family records the last girl and her mother both died in 1887. Does anyone have any information about the marriage of William Arthur and Susan, or does anyone know when, or where she is buried? Are there any Bible records, or family records to substantiate the marriage? |
