John and Elizabeth were married December 30, 1882, probably in Scarborough, York, England. Their 50th anniversary was celebrated in January, 1933, in Chicago, at St. John's Methodist Episcopal Church, where the sermon was "Half a Century of Parnership". This church was built in 1927 at the northwest corner of Jeffery and East 74th Streets with the merger of the South Shore Methodist Episcopal Church at 77th and Coles and the Parkside Methodist Episcopal Church. This may be another source for you. In the story in the Chicago Tribune, it tells that they were barely 18 when they married; that they always celebrated on New Years Day because they wished to be married then; however, marriages could not be held on New Years Day and December 31 fell on a Sunday, also not allowed for marriages, so they were married on December 30th. From census records and reports on the internet, it is known that John and Elizabeth immigrated to America in 1887 with their children Leonard and Helen. There is a wealth of information about the John Blades family on the internet, including the 1881 census in Scarborough, (findmypast.com). There is an Elizabeth Ann Tindall at findmypast.com, born 1865 listed in 1881 in Scarborough; daughter of Joseph and Sarah, she was born in Flixton,Yorkshire - also listed are names of sisters and a brother. These census records are also available at familysearch.org, where the marriage of Elizabeth Ann Tindall to John Jackson Blades was submitted by a person researching the Blades family; you can find the contact person by click on the 'details' section of the record. Note that the death date for Elizabeth is incorrectly listed as October 9, 1934, rather than October 9, 1935; other discrepancies in the listings of children of John and Elizabeth. Marriage and birth records are listed for Scarborough, York, in the LDS catalog; this may be the source for your link - if you can find the marriage record, civil and church with names of parents. Perhaps you have seen this post; it should be possible to contact the person who wrote: http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.blades/203/mb.ashx James Blades married Elizabeth Dunhill 18 Feb 1854 and had about 12 Children. James' parents were John Blades (son of James Blades and Ellen Jackson) and Mary Hardwick (daughter of ? Hardwick and Elizabeth) m.17 Jan 1831. Elizabeth's parents were Leonard Dunhill (son of Leonard Dunhill and Caroline Hault) and Jane Leaper m. 13 Mar 1826. All this took place in the York/Scarborough area of England. Many of James Blades children came to America in the 1885-1895 time frame and first settled in and around Chicago, then moved to Indiana, Iowa and Wisconsin, S. Dakota and Canada. Specifically Mary Elizabeth Blades & Thomas Dunkerly, Jane Blades and Robert Elliott (settled in Iowa), John Jackson Blades and Elizabeth Tindall (Chicago area), James Blades and Sarah Bielby (married in Gary, S. Dakota, settled in Millet, Alberta, Canada) are known to have made the trip to America/Canada. I am seeking more information on the history of this Blades/Dunhill Family. Specifically, my grandmother, Annie Elizabeth Blades was born 1 Jul 1874 in Yorkshire (parents not known), came to America with Mary Blades and Thomas Dunkerly, and married Emil Emmert in Chicago in 1893. She had a cousin John Wesley Tindall Blades son of John Jackson Blades and Elizabeth Tindall. Regards, Mary |
